How do you say field worker? I don't mean farmer, but rather those people who work out in the field doing things by hand.

  • Sorry if I was too vague, I mean as labourer on the field of a farm, i.e., someone employed by the farmer to plant or pick the crop by hand. - slmart Feb 3, 2011 flag

Trabajador campesino

Trabajador de campo

I wouldn´t use "Obrero" because this implies a learned skill, such as "Bricklayer" and even though picking strawberries requires some knowledge to do it well, it´s just not the same.

  • I was under the impression he specifically didn't mean "farmer" by the term "field worker." I was thinking like a phone repairman, plumber, electrician....a fellow out in the "field" of his expertise....but not one who is in an office all day. - webdunce Feb 2, 2011 flag
  • Fieldworker is used a lot in sciences. Like a marine biologist may go do some fieldwork by diving in a reef and observing behaviors, or an archeaologist may go to a dig. - webdunce Feb 2, 2011 flag

Julian is correct in his response, but not all field workers are campesinos. I would like to add: "trabajadores agrícolas" as a field worker.

In México, if you ask a " trabajador de la pisca" if he is a campesino, he will likely tell you: no, I am a "piscador"

  • One would hope that he'd say "Soy (un) pescador." - samdie Feb 2, 2011 flag
  • Trabajador campesino = Worker from anywhere working in the fields/country. Campesino trabajador = Someone from the country who works anywhere, in a city or the country - JulianChivi Feb 2, 2011 flag

Slmart,

It's not entirely clear what you mean by "field worker." Could you give us some examples in English of what you mean by field worker.
