I am doing a presentation on exteme sports. The whole sentence I am trying to make is: When you are near the ground you have to open the parachute. Cuando estas cerca a el suelo, tienes a....

So I just need to know how to say 'to open the parachute'?

abrir el paracaídas

yes im not sure exactly what you expect the answer to be but my boyfriend who is a native of Argentina said you would tell someone **"cuando estas cerca del suelo tienés que abrir el paracaídas"****. Besides teaching someone in a different language how to do such a sport, I suggest keeping it simple and straight to the point. That is how they would say it here in Argentina.

Cuando estás cerca del suelo tienes que abrir el paracaídas.

to open the parachute = abrir el paracaídas

If you want a literal translation of your sentence, this would be: "Cuando estas cerca a el suelo, tienes que abrir el paracaídas". If you want it like a statement in a instruction manual, I would say "Abrir el paracaidas a XXXX metros/pies de altura". It would sound a lot more precise and technical.
