This type of question has been asked before but I am still confused. I want to ask a friend "How was your flight?" and "How was your day?".

Do you use "fue" because it is a past action or "era" because in some instances - ie-the day- may not be over.

I have read both in similar type examples. I remember being taught to describe a person, scene, thing or weather in the past using the imperfect and have seen the following examples. Habría bailado pero la música era horrible. La casa era muy grande. Hacía calor esa noche. However, in another Spanish text, I have also read similar examples but using the preterit: Hizo frío.
La película fue mal.

Thanks!
