Is that in Mexico too? I have always used apartamento, and occasionaly apartamiento for apartment.

En la sala de un departamento Serena se encontraba con la compañía de Darien.

In the room of an apartment, Serena finds herself in the company of Darien. (I always thinks of meets as finds oneself with, makes more sense to me). Gracias.

It does mean "apartment" in some places. Mario Vargas Llosa uses it, and he's from Peru. The dictionary here says it's used in Argentina. I don't remember it being used in Venezuela, though.

Departamento is also used in areas of Mexico. I have friends that use the term.

In Colombia we call "apartamento" to an apartment, and the Colombian territory is divided in 32 "departamentos" (departments).
