It can be masculine or feminine, gil or gila. You are aware that it means jerk, twit, or simpleton in some parts of South America, right?

  • yes, i know the meaning.. so, do you mean that i can refer to a female as " un gil " - racyne Oct 12, 2010 flag
  • She would be "una gila". - gabacholoco Oct 12, 2010 flag

Actually gil can mean foolish in Mexico although I've never heard it used. Therefore it would be an adjective and not a noun.

  • in ecuador it is used a lot when calling someone a dumb fool - racyne Oct 12, 2010 flag
  • ok Thanks that's good to know. Sounds like Kevin answered it pretty well. - gabacholoco Oct 12, 2010 flag
  • although i do recall always phrased " ne seas gil " .. were they saying " don't be foolish " instead of don't be a fool - racyne Oct 12, 2010 flag
