¡Ojo! ¿Cómo es tu mejor amigo? means what is your best friend like? ¿Cómo está tu mejor amigo? means how is your best friend? Y ¿Quién es tu mejor amigo? means who is your best friend.

The translator in this case is correct. You would substitute Quién for cómo to ask, "Who is your best friend?"

As far as I know the translation is right. To ask who would have been- "¿Quién es tu amigo mejor?".

Cómo es tu mejor amigo means how is your best friend.

If you want to say who is your best friend, then you would say quien es tu mejor amigo.

How is your best friend would be ¿Cómo es tu mejor amigo? If you want to say who is your best friend, that would be ¿quien es tu mejor amigo?

Ditto pescador1's response. There's a world of difference between Cómo es and Cómo está.
