I'm just curious why people like to study languages. I study Spanish for a couple of reasons. Mostly, I think it would be useful in my job (I'm studying to be a speech and language therapist) and I like that it's a small class in my large university. Also, my boyfriend is a native Spanish speaker. It's not my primary motivation to learn Spanish, but it does help motivate me to study. surprised

So why do you like learning Spanish?

I just like languages. I started with Spanish in 1972. I lived in Venezuela for two years while in high school. My girlfriend there was the daughter of the ambassador from Portugal to Venezuela, so I learned a little Portuguese. When I came back to the U.S. for college I studied French. I messed around with German a little, which came in handy on a trip to Austria. The company I worked for had on-site Berlitz classes in Japanese because we traveled there a bit to visit customers, so I took one. They've come in handy for me, but frankly I just do it for the fun of it.

I study spanish because it is a language that is growing by leaps and bounds here. Alot of people here (USA) want all non residents to be able to speak English fluently when the first set foot her, no matter where they are from, but the United States has never had an official language. We have whats referred to as "defacto language". Spanish may become the second defacto language here. Keep learning and keep speaking. Nos vemos.

  • That surprises me quite a bit about English being a "de facto" language. I had no idea, and I LIVE in the US. I would have thought whatever's used at gov't lvl is official. - deadscreen98 Sep 8, 2010 flag
  • Actually, we almost made German our official language at one point. Interesting, eh? Probably good we don't have an official one. - KevinB Sep 8, 2010 flag

Learning new languages is very intersting thing ( for me ) I study Spanish because I love it a lot although it's not the field of my study ; I am studying Persian language and Turkish at Faculty of Arts and I studied Hebrew also .

I find more pleasure in learning new languages smile

I'm learning Spanish just to be a show off.

I know so many people that think the world needs to speak English, and the USA version of it at that, that I secretly gloat (okay, not always secretly) when I can say something, anything, that lets someone visiting from another country know that some of us care, even if only a little.

I live in south Florida USA, and more and more Spanish speaking people are moving in the area. I love the Spanish people. They are very friendly and family oriented.

I have a computer business and many of my customers speak Spanish.

Most are from Cuba or Columbia.

Also I just really like the Spanish language. I like the way it sounds, and I like the logical structure of the language.

I live in a community with lots of Spanish speakers and the Spanish I took in school stuck in my head. I could use it at work and be able to talk in Spanish. Mostly, I think it would be cool to have conversations in Spanish.

Languages are just fun to learn (: I'm not fluent in Spanish by any means, but I speak a decent level...and a little Portuguese. I live in Texas... and there's just something about being able to understand all the Spanish-speakers around here that's fun. It's like... a secret language. (: Especially since I'm the only one in my family who speaks it. Everyone always asks me for translations.

Because everybody always says that I think bass ackwards, so why not talk that way also. LOL

I love learning languages, but have yet to be fluent in any other than my native English. I think I just like the feel of foreign words on my tongue. I also find language fascinating. I can easily get sidetracked reading about the history of ancient Aztec languages or how Romanian is on the same branch of romance languages as Spanish, French, and Latin.
