I actually saw that phrase in a BBC Mundo article, today. The Spanish Dict page for the word "ajuste" lists "ajuste de cuentas" as "settling of scores". But I think soccer is right in that context. The sentence from the article is:

"Los criminales llevaron a cabo las ejecuciones como parte de un ajuste de cuentas de un grupo rival del crimen organizado, pero también mataron a inocentes de forma cobarde", aseguró el portavoz.
