Excuse me, my ignorance is showing, referring to flashcards. Why and do we have to have faves? Does it have to do with more points or what?

You are by no means required to put anything on your favorites list for flashcards. It's just a way to organize the ones you like to do so you can find them all in one place, and to let other people know that a certain set is good.
