I looked both up in the translator and they seem almost identical, with one having more of an emphesis on "scribbling". Is the usage more a regional or a dialectal issue? Any help is appreciated. Thanks so much.

Garabato also means Hook.

When talking about scribbling/doodling, Garabato and Garrapato are the same. I believe the usage is regional. In Mexico City, Garabato is more common.
