Are you saying that it should always be al? If so one of my study guides is wrong.
They looked at each other - Se miraron uno a otro
Get these
They help each other - se ayudan mútuamente (OR) entre ellos
Their houses are next to each other - sus casas están una al lado de la otra (OR) juntas
se miraron uno a otro its also correct......
each other means
I hope this help you.....
Actually the problem is quite simple.
al is a contraction of a + el.
so in "el uno al otro" (really being el uno a el otro) it is the early el that indicates you must use al (a + el) to be in correspondence with it
else you would say "uno a otro" without el for both 'otro' words.
the translations (sort of) are in the line of one to another vs the one to the other. The the being the equivalent of el.
its depent what you want to say.. some times you have to use "el" and some times you have to use "a"
I might have it
Thank you everyone. Just have to mull it over a bit.
I realize that it only matters in writing anyway, when speaking, no one is going to know whether you say a or al
Don't be so sure. I would notice as they would have a different meaning.
