Sorry Heidita, I never realized! I'm not very used to type in my new laptop... flat keys + quick fingers= mistakes - AntMexico, Apr 20, 2010
...I agree with chacksobaka and I apologize for having taken russian as an example, might have been any other language... - luz_72, Apr 20, 2010
;) - AntMexico, Apr 20, 2010

I haven't even attempted to think about learning another language yet. I want to master Spanish first, even if it takes 50 years!!!

There probably isn't a language that I wouldn't want to learn. Though there are some languages that I don't like phonetically (and I'm not going to name these not to offend anyone).

If I had a lot of free time, and a brain more capable of language learning wink I would probably try to learn as many languages as I could. Languages of the world always fascinated me - especially the Asian languages, such as Chinese, but also Hindi, even though I doubt I would ever by able to learn those... Recently I spent a week in Ireland, and I thought that if I had a chance to live there for a few months, I would probably try to take Irish Gaelic lessons - to learn at least the very basics!

We have a saying in Slovakia: How many languages you speak, that many times you are a human.

That's pretty much a literal translation, so I'm not sure if it will make sense in English, but I hope it will smile

I think I won't try to learn some languages such as Swahili (Tanzania), Tswana (Botswana), Mòoré (Burkina Faso), Hausa (Niger)

About some languages which many people speak, perhaps I won't learn Japanese, Hindi, Bengali, Urdu, German, Italian

I studied written Chinese. A tonal language like that would be impossible to learn beyond a certain age I think because of the maturation of the brain.

Russian doesn't sound so bad to me.

I disagree, a lot of language learning has to do with self dicipline. My grandfather was the most diciplined human being I've ever met, and he taught himself Chinese when he was retired, go pretty good at it too. - Morethan3words, Apr 20, 2010
Is it very hard to learn? I bet it is. Probably just written is easier, otherwise you have to learn all the different tones of voice! - April-Sarah, Apr 20, 2010
I would like to hear a native Chinese say that he pronounced their language correctly - nizhoni1, Apr 20, 2010

Me encanta japonés. Me gustaría aprender chino y coreano.

I studied French for 6 years and German for 4 years when I was at school. I don't speak a word of either. I am finished with these languages, I will never again attempt to learn them. (Of course, I mean no offence to the good people of France or Germany)

I learned more Spanish in 2 weeks using CDs, books and an internet connection than 10 years using "teachers"

Go figure.

Most of the languages I have been learning and still am endeavouring to improve have, apart from English, had their roots in Latin: Spanish, French and Brazilian Portuguese to be precise - with just a smattering of Italian. When I worked for a short while as a care assistant in a Jewish home in England I took the opportunity of learning a few Hebrew words most of which I have to admit I have forgotten due to lack of opportunity to practise. lol

I mention this due to the fact that I would Not want to learn many languages of the world partly because so few opportunities exist to learn them even less to practise them.with native speakers. Where could anyone learn Catalan for example except the Cataluñian region of Spain e.g.: Barcelona and the surrounding towns. Where could anyone learn Tagalogue except the Philipines? I have to admit that a few langauges don't appeal to me on account of their harsh sounds eg German or complexity eg Russian, Dutch, or Polish.

That's pretty cool that you know all those different languages- there's a lot of places in the world where you could go and speak their language. I would love to go to Spain or Mexico someday to help with my espanol. - April-Sarah, Apr 20, 2010
I have a friend whose mum is dutch- it does sound a bit confusing if she speaks in it! - April-Sarah, Apr 20, 2010
Fortunately we don't need to travel to practice with native speakers... Skype is an excellent option to talk to;) - AntMexico, Apr 20, 2010
You could learn Tagalog in San Francisco too :) - 003487d6, Apr 20, 2010

Those with silent letters that you spelled out yet do not pronounce. No offense, but like German and French.

English? Excusea moi? I speak english as my native language! (just kidding, i'm not really offended) (much) :P. I guess it would be a very hard language to learn with the silent letters, especially k words like knife where it's as if k isn't there. - April-Sarah, Apr 20, 2010
Poor k, he probably feels invisible! lol - April-Sarah, Apr 20, 2010
