I was enticing my friend who is also learning spanish to go to Spanishdict.com but she must have misheard me and was a little iffy about what she thought I had said to be a learning site. So at work when she had nothing better to do and she wanted to check this site out, she ended up typing in spanishd!$#.com and thankfully didn't actually press enter because it sounded rather...wrong... So when she got home we talked about it and I was telling her all the amazing things you learn on this site so she got all excited, grabbed her laptop so we could both go on it and she ended up typing in spanishd!$#.com and pressed enter. Safe to say... Glory Boys is definetly not going to teach us spanish! Haha.

Has anyone ever miss heard you when you speak of Spanishdict.com? I started to say the "T" a bit more pronounced ever since that happend...

On another note... Going to Perú tomorrow! Estoy muy emocionada!

I was giving a talk to a " cancer support group" and told them all about Spanishdict and how i use it for fun and the pleasure it gave to me , and what a great learning tool it was. The next week a few of them - looking very tired and glassy eyed - thanked me for the advice ,saying it had changed their lives and thankfully it was all in English. I now understand what went wrong , and shall make my apologies to the group , hopefully they are still in the group.

  • Ray, I just went to get a little "glassy eyed" myself, but received an error message saying I was "blocked from viewing the content of this site." Guess my parents must have set some controls on my computer? ;)) - territurtle Sep 23, 2011 flag
  • I like to say, "Spanishdict" in my Texas drawl, follwed by, "that's dict with a 't'." - LaloLoco Sep 23, 2011 flag

I always say "I have a great site to recommend... Spanish Dictionary...it's abbreviated SpanishDict.com"

When I told my wife about this site, that was the first thing she said, too. This is an unfortunate issue with the current name.

OMG! Thanks for telling me this! Never in a million years would this have occurred to me! I was trying to figure out what you guys were talking about and didn't get it until ray76's post. Of course, I just got up and may be a little slow.

Yeah, maybe the site should extend the "Dict" part to avoid confusion.

It reminds me of my computer class. The teacher I had made sure that we went to "WhiteHouse.org" and not "WhiteHouse.com". Apparently, they are very different. One gives you a tour of the White House, and the other gives you a tour of something else. LOL.

  • I'll have to admit, I too was slow to catch on. Ray's post was perfect, wasn't it!! - territurtle Sep 23, 2011 flag

Thus far I've emailed about SpanishDict to all but my spouse. He knows the site and its name but I still way over emphasize the final 't' lest he tease me about where I spend my "surf time". The boy is merciless. cool grin

While don't we change it to Spanishaddict.com. Let's face it, most of us are either addicted or clinically obsessed with this site.

I realized that problem when I mentioned the site to a friend so I immediately corrected myself and told her it's Spanish Dictionary, connect the 2 words, then use only the first four letters of dictionary. She hasn't gotten back to me yet, so maybe she still got that wrong. Or maybe she's here, became an addict and forgot all about me. grin Have a great trip!

Now that I think about it...I have been telling customers at work about this site... I hope they don't think I'm leading them on to some naughty site haha.

Oh! And i'm back finally from Peru! I learned a few new words although the only problem was that I didn't understand full sentences...

eg. Tiene blah blah blah blah blah

Tengo = I have

So I never know what they have when they are talking to my boyfriend! Oh.. And something silly happend.

We went to a day club in Lima (It starts at 2pm and goes on until 8pm) and after it was done we needed a cab to get home (boyfriends mothers place). He asks his mom on the phone if 5 sol would be fine. She said yes. So we named our price to the cab driver and we were off! Well! We were actually only a block away from the place so it would have been worth probably 1sol to get home!

The reason we paid 5 sol was because his mother made it look farther when she went down different roads trying to look for the place to drop us off. So we didn't realize it was only just down the block.

He's lived in Lima before so he's kicking himself in the butt when he realized he paid way more than he should have haha.

Oh and his cousin (I think) bribed a cop with 2 sol (which is like .70cents)

When you tell your friends about it, you have to say:

SpanishDic-T

Oh yeah, and make sure that your mouth is really moist when you say it, too. That way they can tell by the tiny drops of saliva raining down on them that there is definitely a "T" on the end of that bad boy.

I can't believe this is the first post mentioning this, at least to my knowledge.

The boy is merciless.

My husband and son tease me constantly about this. They could care less about emphasizing the "t" or explanations about dictionaries. They have found something to push my buttons and they have. mad LOL

Last year, I had my friend Luis, a Dominican over for dinner. He was helping me to translate a rather large document. I was innocently singing the praises of Spanishdict all night. Every time I would say this, he gave me a blank stare, while my husband held back laughter.

After Luis left, my husband said "How many times did you have to mention the name of that site?' He then explained the situation to me, as I am usually clueless about these things. Anyway, it has been a running joke since.

Just another thing I can thank this site for!!wink cheese grin LOL LOL

Haha!! I have always feared this problem, so I usually say:

"Spanish- D-I-C-T-dot-com"

and spell out the "dict"

or, I say "Spanish-dicT-as-in-dictionary-dot-com", but, usually I just spell it out and I'm okay... besides, quite a bit of the people at my school already know about this site, so I'm usually alright anyway. cheese

Well, since someone brought this thread back from the dead, I have a story to share.

I recently helped a family member move his house. After we were done moving the furniture etc. in I asked to borrow my brother's laptop. So, I logged onto Spanishdict, saw someone ask a question, and I took a while to answer him.

Meanwhile my family was outside waiting for me. After a bit I got out there and my sister-in-law asked me why I took so long.

¡BUENO! ¿Qué crees que le dije? I will tell you. I said "sorry, I take my Spanishdict very seriously!"

Bueno, I'm sure I don't have to tell you what happened next. She looked at me and said "what did you just say?"

So I told her. Spanishdict, as in diction, or dictionary.

  • Like you, I am a person of few words (verbal ones, that is). Unlike you, mine are not profound!! So mercifully, I have never actually vocalized the URL, I just call it "My Beloved Spanish Site," and offer to send the URL. :-> - territurtle Sep 23, 2011 flag
