I'm sorry I haven't updated you all for a couple of weeks, but there has really been nothing to tell.

I think most of you are looking at things from the point of view of people used to the American system of healthcare - it's quite different over here smile. I'm not complaining about our health service here - it's generally very good - but in cases like Albert's it can be very much slower than the USA model. However, it does have two huge advantages (I think) over America's. It's available to everyone, and it's completely free. So we never have to consider the cost of the treatment we need, or to worry that our insurance might not cover us.

So we have been spending the last two weeks fighting our way through the bureaucratic nightmare that is involved in any treatment as complicated and innovative as the one that Albert is to have, but now, all the paperwork is complete, all the initial tests and checks have been done, and we begin the treatment on Wednesday. There will be 8 weeks of intensive chemotherapy to attack the metastasis to his liver, followed by the new GV1001 treatment that we are hoping will be the breakthrough that everyone has been looking for.

I don't really know what to expect during this. I've asked, but all they can tell me is that "everyone reacts differently", and "not everyone has all (or any) of the side effects". So we are hoping for the best, preparing for the worst, and whatever happens, putting everything we've got into the battle.

If determination has any positive effect on the outcome of this, then it will surely be good. And if prayer and caring also count for something, then all of you on Spanishdict will have made a huge contribution. Our thanks go out to you all.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Sheila,

Abuelita and I continue to think about you and keep you in our prayers. I wish there were more we could do, but then after all, prayer is still the most powerful medicine.
