What does qué va mean? Is that like "what gives?" in English?

  • Que va, literally translated "that goes". Qué needs an accent. - Eddy Apr 22, 2011 flag

It's used as an interjection "¡Qué va!", meaning "Come on!" or "No way!"

If you're reading "The Old Man and the Sea" then the boy means "No worries" when he says "Que va". I'm amazed by how many people are reading that in Spanish.

  • I just heard it. I guess it was said more as an interjection. But glad to know it can mean something lighter than than too. Thanks! - Rikko Mar 15, 2010 flag

It's used mostly in Spain and means "no way".

  • We used it a lot in Venezuela, with the same meaning. - KevinB Apr 22, 2011 flag

A little context would give the meaning "of course not".

¿No me vas a echar la bronca? - No, qué va

You're not going to tell me off, are you? - Of course I'm not.

  • There shouldn't be an accent over the "a". - Eddy Apr 23, 2011 flag
