I tried the test too . I got 9/10 on the first one and 6/10 on the second.

Yep, my friends I also belong to the "Inicial" level .

In a way it is not that dramatic. It simply means that I still have many things to learn.

I was really discouraged by this test, and without knowing how many others here did on it I think it would have been a bad experience. Knowing that several of my peers here had a similar struggle makes me feel a bit better.

I wonder if this test isn't meant to make the test taker feel bad in order to get them to sign up for the in-country courses they offer.

I mean, really now, what kind of "elementary level" test would include the present perfect tense of an irregular verb like ir? Give me a break, dude! That is especially true given that almost every one of us realized the preterite, fui, would fit the sentence fine and be grammatically correct! So not only did they use an advance tense of an irregular verb, they also made it a trick question.

The next question lets one choose between the various advanced tenses of haber. I think that level is filled with difficulties for the average "elemental" level student, but when you fail to get 70%, you get:

I too chose "fui". I didn't find it confusing (the only plausible choices were "he ido" [what they wanted] and "fui"). I read the justification for their choice and I remain unconvinced. It seemed to me that their argument explained why one could use "he ido" but not that one must use the present perfect. It still seems to me to be a question of how the speaker feels about time frame of the event.

• I guess it's confusing for the person who is learning and doesn't understand why "fui" is incorrect... and it's not incorrect. In fact we don't use the present perfect at all, except in some areas in Argentina. - Benz Mar 12, 2010
