Let’s practice with “tener”! Just write a phrase that uses “tener”, but translates as “to be” when said in English. Be sure to write the translation. To keep it simple, let’s just use present tense.

¡Vamos a practicar con el verbo “to be”! Escriban una frase que utiliza el verbo “to be” en Inglés, pero traduce como “tener” en Español. Recuerden hacerlo en Inglés y en Español. Para que no sea tan complicado sólo usaremos tiempo presente.

No tengo verguenza.

I am not ashamed.

  • Good sentence. I know that when you type your answer, there's no option to enter "ü" into the text, but "verguenza" should be "vergüenza" (just in case some people don't know). - MeEncantanCa Feb 21, 2010 flag

tener, vt 2). to be (medida, años, sensación, cualidad)

  • le tiene lástima -> he feels sorry for her

Here we find an example in the dictionary listed under tener´s meaning of "to be". The translation is given as "feels", but I think this can count anyway. One might say that if he feels sorry for her that he is sorry for her.

Voy a ver si se me ocurre algo:

I am interested in reading books. Tengo interés en leer libros

  • Hmmm... It can be translated as either "I have an interest" or "I am interested in". I think the "I am..." translation is used a bit more frequently, so I'll accept it. :) - MeEncantanCa Feb 22, 2010 flag
