Lluvia lluvia lluvia!

Question

Rain seems to be a topic at the moment and I was wonderdering how many different sayings , there are for describing how hard it is raining,for instance in England we say that it is raining cats and dogs. Also, here in Spain we have sayings that go with the rain,like;es bueno para los patosores bueno para el pelo (hair) or even es buena para los huesos en el cemetario.What do you say in your part of the world when it is raining and what other sayings do you use?

It's raining cats and dogs.

This phrase comes from old England when the road system was mostly dirt roads and they generally had large potholes in them. The dogs and cats in that day were allowed to run free and would fall into the potholes when navigating the rain-soaked roads. Thus people would joke with each other when they saw a dog or cat land in a rain-filled pothole and say "It's raining cats and dogs!"

He bumped his head and went to bed and couldn't get up in the morning.

I guess it is actually a little morbid, but then again, most children rhymes are!

In France they say "il pleut des cordes" which literally means in English "it's raining ropes". Pretty interesting.

My dad, from Oklahoma, always calls a heavy rain a "toad strangler". I'm really not sure how to translate that! Anyone? Estrangulador de sapas? Ahogador de sapas?

I'm not sure how you would say this in spanish, I think it's a kind of made up verb jeje but it's what we say up here in Scotland.

In the southwestern US it is so dry that at times the rain does not reach the ground.You see the moisture hanging the rain like drapery until it evaporates.

People call it La Manga. I have also heard of something called ?virga? for a similar appearance but did not find it defined.
