I was reading the above listed thread, and I was curious if anyone could give me more information as to where it has become custom to do this (or where it has not, if that is more reasonable). The song lyrics discussed are from Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz, but I have heard this regularly in casual speech with Mexican friends and acquaintances both here in the United States, and also in Mexico.

I think that elision is a spoken language featuare present in most languages and to refer you where it has become common certain ways of ´dropping´ vowels or consonats in Spanish or any other language might take years.

You will soon find elisions everywhere, especially in everday conversations. Some of them may be typical of certain regions and you will learn to identify people by their pronunciation or vocabulary.
