How do you know when to use the verb Recordar (to remember) and Acordarse (to remember)?

Thanks,

Shane

Estoy sorprendido que nadie ha contestado esta cuestión todavía.

I'm not sure if there is a hard and fast rule about when to use which. I'm pretty sure that they are just interchangeable.

No recuerdo alguna regla. No me acuerdo alguna regla.

Paz hermano.

  • It must be double negative......No recuerdo ninguna regla, etc. - JulianChivi Feb 9, 2010 flag

This answer is based on a discussion I had with one of my native-speaking friends, so if he is wrong, I am wrong! This is the explanation he gave me:

**"Recordar" = remembering near events in the past

"Acordarse" = remembering events farther in the past or more momentous events**

I hope this helps you! I would love to see more people weigh in on this...I am curious as well.

One of my own observations that I would love for someone to confirm is that "Acordarse" seems to be used in the command form more often.....

  • One of my Spanish audio lesson courses uses acordarse to remember things from the last lesson. - jeezzle Feb 9, 2010 flag
  • You're right about imperative form, ie: "Acuérdate de lo que te digo." - JulianChivi Feb 9, 2010 flag
