I'm sure that the next question to run through your mind is: How do I know if a noun is masculine or feminine so I know whether to use el or la?

The best method is to look up each word in the dictionary as you learn the words to see what their gender is (if they are feminine or masculine). There are general rules like most words ending in xxxx are feminine or masculine, but all of these generalities have exceptions.

Lucrecia's answer is sufficient 99% of the time, but even it has exceptions. There are feminine nouns that use the masculine, definite article "el" under certain conditions.

Sorry to have to tell you, but Spanish, just like any other language has exceptions to most of its rules. As a beginner, go with the generalized rules. You'll make mistakes with the exceptions, but that's how you'll learn them. Don't fear criticism as long as it's constructive criticism.

el is the single article for masculine nouns: el vaso (the vase) la is the single article for feminine nouns: la mujer (the woman) similarly, los and las are the masculine and feminine articles for plural nouns

And to add to Lucrecia's great answer, Él (with accent) is He and La is also a personal pronoun (You) when speaking to a woman using formalUsted.

They both mean The, but el is masculine and La is feminine.
