As I have looked around on this site, I have noticed certain phrases used more commonly than others, and phrases different than those I am used to frequently pop up on flashcard sets. For example, "no lo se," rather than "yo no sé," for the phrase "I don't know," as I am used to. Is there a particular way of speaking Spanish that is taught here? (As in Castillian vs. Latin American) Or is my grammar just atrocious?

There must be a standard International brand of Spanish.

It's not Latin American Spanish. There are many words you will learn here that are not used in Mexico. However, most of the words are general and all purpose.
