'rie ahora , llora des pues'

Question

Hi folks, i have a tattoo appointment next week, in the tattoo i want the phrase 'laugh now, cry later' in spanish, as the tattoo is of mexican origin.

I have seen many different translations,

here are a few

'rie ahora , llora des pues'

'rase ahora grito luego '

rase ahora, el grito luego

Can anyone correct these if wrong? obviously it has to be perfect !!!

i think grito means scream...

and indeed despues is one word. Good on you for loging onto to this forum before getting it inscribed on your body. I would also contact a real life friend who speaks spanish just in case.

All three options are grammatically incorrect. The correct literal translation is this:

Ríe ahora, llora después (Pasa-bolita, note the accent marks.)

BTW, the verb conjugator on this site is NOT to be trusted. It gives "ree" as the informal imperative of reir!

Stevo, before you tattoo someone's body with this (something I'll never understand, but that's neither here nor there), make sure you know exactly what they want to say. The Spanish changes depending on whether the verbs are plural or singular, formal or informal, etc.

BTW, what you wrote means (where I live) "F''k tattoo now, cry later." Is that what you meant to say'

I did say "something like this" in my reply, as I wasn't sure.

It was meant to be - get a tattoo now cry later. I used the verb coger, obviously incorrect.

I think the way to say get a tattoo is "hacer un tatuaje." (Maybe you could say tatuarte, but I don't know.)

So, what you meant to say was "Haz(te) un tatuaje ahora..."

Not really, Eddy, this happens in Spanish frequently, to have/get something done: to do it yourself....often no difference.

Mañana me voy a tatuar una cobra: I am having a tattoo of a cobra done.

mañana me voy a cortar el pelo: I will get my hair cut.

He reparado el coche : I had my car repaired.

Of course, this is completely ambiguous, as you can actually have done it yourself, you have to add"myself" then.

Yo misma me ha cortado el pelo. Yo mismo reparé el coche.....
