after esperar que you don't use the subjunctive right? so "espero que pasará un buen fin de semana" means i hope you will have a good weekend...? but do you put pasar in the present or future? thanks in advance!

You do always use the subjunctive after esperar if there is a change and subject and thus a "que" Esperar, like desear, permitir and others, is a verb of will and triggers a subjunctive clause as you are not indicating an actual fact.

Espero que pases un buen fin de semana.

  • Not true. "Je espere que tu passes un bon weekend." (subjunctive). - samdie Jan 9, 2010 flag
  • what do u mean? not true about what? j'espere que tu passes is not subjunctive it's nominative - layann Jan 9, 2010 flag

Hi Layann

I think that´s because the French use of the subjunctive, just like the English use, is diminishing.

That clears up some of the confusion I had about "espero que tengas una navidad muy buena". As a new student of spanish that subjunctive can be confusing!

Actually I am now more confused!! Is it the fact that "esperar" is a verb of "will and triggers", or because "que" is used? Would one say "I hope that you have a good weekend" the same as one would say "I hope you have a good weekend"?
