One possible difference is intention. Reunir connotates a planned meeting while encontrar can mean "stumble upon or across". [to find/discover oneself somewhere]

I assume you mean "reunir". Well the noun "reunión" (meeting) is likely from reunir. They are synonyms of a sort with slightly different meanings (in my opinion). I would use conocer to mean I met a person and became acquainted with them. Encontrar to mean I encountered someone on the way home from work, and reunir to mean to meet like you are having a meeting. I'm not a native though, so I might be off a bit.
