I was wondering the exact conditions of when the future tense must be used instead of "voy a ." Thank you very much.

Well, the future tense in Spanish is similar to the future in English. Look:

  • Iré a la escuela. (I will go to school.)
  • Me voy a la escuela. (I'm going to school.) So, 'Will + infinitive' = comeré, dormiré, trabajaré, etc. And 'Be + going to + infinitive' = voy comer, voy dormir, voy trabajar, etc. Check verb tenses in Spanishdic for other verbs conjugations.
