It means affection, and baby, darling, sweetheart, etc. It can be nice and affectionate and welcome if it's to your sweety, or it can be obnoxious and harassing if it's to a stranger.

It basically means affection.

  • But it is also very commonly used to address someone you like or are attracted to - sweety, honey, etc. - Brett1971 Dec 11, 2009 flag

You know how some norteaméricanos say "hun" (for honey)? A waitress at a diner would say, "what can I get you, hun? A cup of coffee?"

I've heard some Latinos say, 'oye, cariño, ¿me puedes ayudar con algo?" which would be, "hey, hun, can you help me with with something?"
