How do you know when to use ser or ir?

I have to fill in blanks with the correct form of ser or ir and I don't know which one to use, please help! okay, ex) Cuando Maribel y Paco _____ jovenes, ______ muy buenos amigos. I have no idea!

Ser = to be

Ir = to go

Here is my translation of you sentence:

When Maribel and Paco ____ young, _____very good friends. It seems as though they both require the verb ser (to be) so that the sentence would say "When Maribel and Paco were young they were very good friends."

I would say, "Cuando Maribel y Paco fueron jovenes, fueron muy buenos amigos."

Can anyone verify that?
