I think you are trying to say "to throw down the gauntlet" as in a duel or a challenge to someone. This would translate in Spanish as "arrojar o tirar el guante". To fight a duel you could say "batirse en duelo".

I don't know ..what does "hechar el guante" mean in Spanish .. I'll look it up and be right back.....Ok ..does it mean to give up ..like throw in the towel? or does it mean challenge to a duel .. like slap someone with a glove? ..I couldn't find it in any of my books but I still have one more place to look .. hold on... Nope I could find it anywhere .. where is that expression most common?

"Echar el guante a alguien" means to get hold of/seize/catch somebody.

"Echar el guante a algo" means to lay hold of something.

I think we got there in the end.

Back in the day when duels were legal, to hit someone in the face with a glove was recognized as a challenge to a duel. So that idiom exists in English also, although it's very rarely used anymore.

Para traducir "echar el guante," pues, supongo que podría decir "issue a challenge."
