I'm reading Plaza del diamante by Mercé Rodoreda and have come across the following line: "Tenía unos ojitos de mono y llevaba una camisa blanca con rayitas azules..." What does "de mono" mean? Does it mean he has little monkey eyes or that his eyes are small and cute?

Little Monkey Eyes??

When I think of monkey eyes, it is just the opposite, I think of large limpid eyes like a deer. How about this photo of monkey eyes

Are they trying to say this guy is cute in an impish kind of way? If this is a love story I guess I could stare into eyes like those above as long as I ignored the hair on the back , arms, hands.......

One definition in this dictionary was "lovely" but I am not sure I can squeeze that in here.
