¡Gracias!

I just did a google search on "el maiz en agua con ceniza" and came up with a couple of sites that discuss how to do this. I'm sorry I don't know how to transfer the sites onto my post (I am very tech-deficient), but the sites both came up right away. Hopefully that will help...

This article mentions the purpose of boiling something in water containing ashes.

in Spanish

The ancient inhabitants of the territory they currently occupy in Mexico and Central America discovered at an early stage of history that the rind (pericarp) which covers the corn kernels are softened and could be easily removed if they were boiled in water with ashes.

page is available in English.

I was only able to get a superficial meaning of the Spanish question here. When I was on the Navajo reservation the grandmothers would put wood ash in their ground blue corn mush. They did it because it made their bones strong and there may be some truth to that.

  • hmm, interesante. ¡Gracias! - angela86 Nov 13, 2009 flag
  • One of the articles said that the ashes may have contiained lime (calcium oxide) that has the same effect and we all know calcium builds strong bones. Grandma always knows best. - - qfreed Nov 14, 2009 flag
