todavía vs. aún

Question

What is the difference between ‘aún’ and ‘todavía’ since both mean ‘still‘ ?

For example:

No, I still haven't deposited the check.

No, aún no he depositado el cheque

No, todavía no he depositado el cheque

Or like in:

Haven't you finished yet?

¿Aún no has terminado?

¿Todavía no has terminado?

What timing:

I reviewed and researched same thing last weekend and found that "aún" has a couple uses that "todavía" does not.

Más aún = furthermore

Menos aún = let alone

• "Ella no puede hervir las papas, menos aún concinar una comida."

• (She can't boil potatoes, let alone cook a meal.)

Also: "aún" = maybe, or perhaps

-¿Lo compradarás? (Will you buy it?)

• Si lo rebajan, aún. (If they reduce it, maybe/perhaps)

In your sentences they are exactly the same.

Todavía no lo he hecho.

Aún no lo he hecho.

I believe todavia is more acceptable in a negative sentence. Whereas, aún can be used in a positive or negative context.

No conozco una regla al respecto, pero pensando en algunos ejjemplos me doy cuenta que "todavía" es más común utilizarla para acciones que deberían realizarse a plazos cortos y "aún" indistintamente a plazos largos o cortos, pero en plazos cortos suena más formal. Si bien los ejemplos que mencionas son correctos, es más común escuchar a la gente decir:

No aún no he depositado el cheque. No, todavía no deposito el cheque. (Como si ya estuviera en proceso o muy cerca de hacerlo)

¿Aún no has terminado? ¿Todavía no terminas?

Pero por más que pienso, no encuentro un ejemplo donde no puedan alternarse las dos palabras.
