After Spanish, what's next?
First English, now Spanish, what would be the best language to learn next? Perhaps Italian, since it shares so many words with Spanish? Thanks to all who answer.

I would tell you to study Portuguese. It's the most similar language to Spanish. You'd learn it fast. Someone said that learning a similar langue would mix it up. I don't agree. One language helps the other one. Here a few exemples of Portuguese:
- Bom dia = Buenos días
- Boa tarde = Buenas tardes
- Boa noite = Buenas noches
- Eu sou do Brasil = Yo soy de Brasil
Well Italian would be my next choice because I already have a decent start in that language. I have also wanted to learn some Portuguese because I would love to visit both Brasil and Portugal one day.
But to be honest, I love Spanish and the many opportunities it provides for me and I think I will be focused on learning it for quite a while. ![]()
Italian is a good stepping stone from Spanish. I agree it shares a lot of vocabulary with Spanish, but I think it shares a lot more grammatically with French. So from Italian, French would be a good choice.
Dude. After I learn Spanish....I'm going to Disneyland! ![]()
My advice is not to learn a language that is similar to Spanish next, like Italian, because you will end up getting the languages confused. FYI Everybody that's cool is learning Mandarin next.....but I'm thinking Korean. I've already spent 6 months on Japanese though.....how about Norwegian? ![]()
French would be a good choice. People from several countries speak it, so it could come in handy, especially if you travel a lot.
I want to learn Australian. The kings of abreviations!!!!!!

I will go back to learning a language I will probably never get to use, but I really want to lean it. Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig).
I will be able to use Spanish everyday though, so I figured it's probably best to lern that first.
German. Took some lessons some ten years ago, and it's funny the ridiculous things i remember. Also, mother speaks fluent Greek, and i love how it sounds.
Those two have been on my top list, though Latin has been my impossible dream, and every time it seems close it goes away again.
One more thing: Chinese would be useful, and i did learn some interesting sentences while traveling for a few months in china, and the most practiced ones were the ones related with life threatening food allergies... always handy to learn those!
Oh man... So many things to say in so many different languages! How can one choose! (wouldn't it be super amazingly awesome if we could 'download' languages into out brains?).
Have a good night everyone...
my advice would me italian, because it's similar. i speak it myself
then, maybe once you have learned more, it is easier for you (or at least it was for me) to learn another, maybe harder, language. good luck!
I have no intention of learning another language after Spanish, but Chinese would probably be the most useful. Languages just don't come naturally to me.
