Can someone distinguish between "para" and "por" that area had been a slight problem for me
I would like to know when "para" and "por" should be used accordingly, when they are used and how they are used.

This is not a direct answer to your question, but rather a word of encouragement. Definitely check the link that Robertico supplied for you.
Encouragement: I have seen university semester classes on the graduate level dedicated to the analysis of sticky grammatical question. "Para vs. por" is always included on that list. If you are somewhat of a beginner in this, you may have to just plain memorize some expressions at first. That's OK. If it's any help to you, native Spanish speakers find our "in/on/at" or "along/through" words terribly challenging. (example: "I was along the sidewalk" vs. "I was walking through the sidewalk".
Keep working on it...
