What would you call a "smartphone" in Spanish?

in many countries, technological terms are not at all translated, so if you have a doubt you can always call it a smartphone. this is because many words are 'imported' from another language (in general, this one being english) like in japanese, where i believe you still call it internet and e-mail.

so yeah... teléfono inteligente is a good guess in case of doubt, but try smartphone.
