It is probably because you speak in a different dialect. there are many types, or dialects, of Spanish spoken around the world. The type of Spanish spoken in Mexico would be very different than, say, Spain. It it usually only varied slightly, but some dialects could be totally different from each other. It's just the way it is spoken in different countries.

Where did the Spanish that you speak come from?

It is probably because the Spanish that is spoken here is generally based upon Spanish from Spain. It is a similar phenomenon to non-English speaking English Language Learners generally are taught English from England, even though the majority of native English speakers live outside of the UK.

Though, one could argue that people from the United States don't really speak English, as we have corrupted it to suit our needs.

You are speaking a unique language that is special to Texas. Usually people who identify themselves as Tejanos speak a different Spanish then, say, the Chicanos from LA. From my knowledge, even those two types of Spanish vary from the Spanish spoken in the border towns.....which is different from the Spanish spoken in Chiapas, Mexico, which is different from the Spanish spoken in Spain. Whew, that was a mouth full!!

By the way, welcome to a great place to enhance your Spanish. If you are not already fluent, this will help you improve your Spanish no matter where you end up using it!!

Then you simply speak a slightly different dialect. There's nothing wrong with your Spanish, it is just that the Spanish spoken here is somewhat Americanized. wink
