We have used this expression in western Canada for years. It does come from the wire they use for holding bales of hay together. I used to work in the farm equipment repair division of a company. I seen a lot of haywire where it was not supposed to be. Farmers were very good at holding things together with haywire rather then fixing it properly. Hence the expression "Everything is going haywire." Basically everthing is falling apart.

I hope this helps. I dont think there would be a direct translation from English to Spanish unless a person was aware of the origin of the expression.

A veces, se dice de una persona que "He went haywire." Quiere decir que ha perdido la chaveta. Cuando hace referencia a una maquina o plan, significa estropearse o descomponerse

Some times it's said of a person that "He went haywire." This means that he has come unhinged/gone off his rocker/flipped out. When it refers to a machine or a plan, it means (is a way of saying) "estropearse" or "descomponerse" (it's falling apart/coming undone/breaking down)
