Yo e mis hijos.

Is the "e" a word when it is used as "and" in Spanish? Or is it always "y"?

In Spanish never say " I and my children". "e" is used when the word begins with the letter "i"

"e" is used when the word begins with the letter "i"

Almost. It can also be "hi" as in the "hijos" in the example. It cannot be just any i or hi, however. They must have the sound of the conjunction y to require switching to e. The "y" does not change to "e" before words like hierba where the "hi" does not sound like the conjunction "y".

Poor example. I wanted to say that the hi in this case (hierba) sounds like an English letter y, but that is confusing. Let's say that the y changes to e before i or hi if they sound like "ee". The hi in hierba sounds like the English letter y; not ""ee".

Sorry for the poor explanation.

  • Your explanation is clear. Y changes to e befor i or hi if the i is not part of a dipthong. - CalvoViejo Nov 4, 2009 flag
