i want to say asa they were about to fall asleep... but how would i say that?

Como estaban a punto de quedarse dormidos, como estaban por quedarse dormidos, como se estaban por quedar dormidos.
"Quedarse dormido," call it an idiom if you will, means "to fall asleep" or "to doze off". "Dormirse" also means the same thing. I think "quedarse dormido" would be more common where I am. Good thinking, Stobber!
