I made a reference to this in one of my answers in a joking way, but now I'm completely serious: What is to keep people from getting two or more profiles and voting for themselves? I mean, other than the difficulty of remembering each profile...

If you have to have a valid email address to register, then there's a deterrent in that you'd have to maintain two email accounts to be able to do that.

But otherwise? Probably nothing. It'd still take a long time to accrue enough points to be given high-level powers like editing posts anyway, because your rate of voting over a recent period tapers the number of points you get for voting and being voted.

What good does it do you, anyway? If you're not giving quality responses, then nobody's going to care if you have 10k points or 0 points. They'll ignore your posts either way.

Don't get so hung up on the letter of the law. This isn't the military. wink People who abuse the system will eventually be rejected by the more altruistic members of the community, so it'll all work itself out in the end.

Hi Hooah,

I am really happy that you have become a member of this forum and that you enjoy asking questions. Looking at your profile, I see that you are fourteen years old. I have a daughter your age, so I know I am going to sound like a "mom", but here goes.

I would love to see you start taking the Learn Spanish Videos, because you seem very bright and I think you would really benefit from them. I don't want you to be worried about people cheating, because those who would even attempt to do such a thing are only cheating themselves. Those who have been around here long enough know which people make consistent, positive contributions. Anyone else will not have us fooled for long. Even if they do, most of us don't care, because our main focus is on learning to speak Spanish. You have expressed an interest in writing, which is excellent. If you continue with learning on this site consistently and learn to speak Spanish, you will be able to be a writer in two languages. That would be absolutely amazing!! So I am encouraging you to stop worrying about the cheaters, we'll figure them out anyway. But don't cheat yourself. Really focus on learning here and I know the results will be amazing!! smile

Your friend, Nicole
