When is it approptiate to use "lo que" in a sentence

Does "lo que" just mean "what"?

Use it in the middle of a sentence. "Que" is "what" or "that" at the beginning. "Lo que" is used in the middle to mean "what". Sometimes you will hear "que" used to mean "what" in the middle also, in songs and whatnot, but proper form dictates that "lo que" is "what" when in the middle........ according to Michel Thomas.
