Has anyone used Telcel for cell phone service in Mexico? If so, did you purchase your phone from Telcel? Were you satisfied with Telcel? If you called the US from Mexico, were the rates per minute reasonable? I am looking at a 4 month commitment to Telcel, with a "pay as I go" plan and I would appreciate feedback, if there is anyone out there...

Telcel is a good company, but their rates and plans are considerable more expensive that the ones offered by companies in US. Now, if you are going to call from Mex to US, be prepare to pay at least 5 or 10 pesos per minute (around .50 to 1 dlls per min.) or more. There is a plan name "Amigo Kit" where you can use a pre-paid card with no contract or commitments. I personally think that this call will be cheaper for you if you just get a phone plan by a US company.

I would recommend calling the US from Mexico via Skype. Computer to computer is free, and computer to phone is very cheap.
Telcel's "Amigo" plan is reasonable as cell phone plans go, for in-country calls. I purchased a low-tech Nokia phone that functioned perfectly for US$40, and it came with something like 40 minutes on it. You can buy minutes by purchasing a prepaid card, much like pay-as-you-go plans in the States, but the tricky thing is that they do expire. My recommendation would be to buy fewer than you think you will need. You can also use your minutes to send and receive text messages.

As a last note: calling the US from Mexico on your Telcel pay-as-you-go cell phone is extremely costly, as in over US$1 per minute.
