ASK A QUESTION word 'dude'

Those are spelled "tío" and "güey."
Dude is a guy-thing. Dude was used, at least when I was growing up, as a term similiar to "man", "guy", etc. I remember Jeff Spicoli in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" saying "Learning about Cuba, and having some food." and "Make up your mind, dude, is he gonna s% or is he gonna kill us?" He was the classic surfer "dude" for lack of a better word. ![]()

dude - tipo, tío
synonyms: colega, hombre, tronco, hermano
edit: please do not use swearwords
I have also heard the word 'bato' used among Mexicans.
'Dude' could just refer to males, in an informal way. Since 'dude' can also be slang, a translation would have to take into consideration what the speaker is thinking. In my high school years, 'dude' was popular to use between the guys in the 'surfer' cliques.
- "Bato" should be spelled "Vato," they don't distinguish the two beginning sounds. They even call the V their "second B." - Malenor Oct 31, 2009 flag
- No, actually the word IS 'Bato', but is commonly misspelled for the reason Malenor stated. ;-) - chaparrito Nov 1, 2009 flag
Hi everybody, yes, the word cab*** can be used in Spain only as a more or less friendly term. But we are weird guys, so don't use that ever unless you have lived here for a while, meaning a very long while, otherwise you might get your nose punched.
I am sorry, I had to delete all the comments and posts.
- I had the unfortunate experience of thinking that word was simply an animal, much to the embarrassment of the young man to whom I was talking. :-( - chaparrito Nov 1, 2009 flag
Chamaco? Cuate? Chavo? One guy I met called everyone he ever saw "cuñado" . Same basic idea, I guess. A slangy, informal word for "guy".
