What is the difference between "el piso "and "el suelo"?

They both mean floor, right? So does one refer to floor as the story of a house or building?

It seems to me that they mean different things in different countries. However, you can always say El tercero piso (the third floor).

In Spain, piso can also mean apartment or flat.

I think that suelo is mostly from Latin American countries and means the floor (as in, you are walking on the floor or clean the floor).

suelo=piso

piso also means the "floors" of a building. i.e. "the third floor".

As Marianne said, in Spain "piso" is also apartment or flat.
