What is the derivation of el desayuno (breakfast)?
Breakfast in English is from Middle English and means to break the fast. What is a similar explanation for the words el desayuno? Sue

Coincidentally, it's the same concept. "Ayuno"in Spanish means "fast"; "desayuno" means - in effect - "un-fast". The infinitive "ayunar" is to fast.
Breakfast is the first meal of the day and is always taken in the morning after a period of not eating (whilst asleep). This period of "fasting" is called ayuno, and so the word desayuno (breakfast) translates to "from this fasting" de-eso-ayuno = desayuno.
