Which the difference in the use of " a traves" and "al traves"

I'm not sure of this answer, but... "A traves" literally means to traverse. In lesson 1.7 of Spanish Dict learn, the teacher tells you that "a" means "to (do something)" and you need to add an indefinite article (el/la). "a" and "el" combine to form "al", so you can interpret the meanings as the same.
