What does 'el pilar' mean? Is a holiday/bank holiday perhaps? And, if so, is it a formal or informal term? Thanks.

I found three possible meanings.

1) The dictionaries say it's "a post, a pillar, or a milestone."

2) The Urban Dictionary says (Fr. Spanish: pillar, support) A woman who displays unswerving--and deserving--loyalty, support and affection within a romantic relationship.

3) Wikipedia says "October 12 is the Day of the Virgin of El Pilar and also the day on which the “discovery” of America is celebrated (a counterpart to the celebration of Columbus Day in the United States); it has been called at different times the Day of the Race (Día de la Raza) ."

"October 12 is the Day of the Virgin of El Pilar

that is it I guess, first thought came into my mind seeing the post. We usually refer to this as "el pilar".

It means "The Pillar".

In Spanish, we were learning about mountains, pillars statues, etc.
