past tense is used when you're saying that something happened once and it's done with ex. "yo nací..." (i was born..)- the action happened and is over imperfect is used when something would happen repeatedly in the past ex. "tenía cinco años"-you were 5 years old for a period of time or when saying "jugaba con un perro"- here you're saying that you played with your dog repeatedly in the past, not on one occasion.

Used to can be transmitted as imperfect in Spanish, but it has to make sense.

¿gemelo o mellizo? (identical twin or fraternal twin?). I only ask because I know some identical twins and when they discuss their past everything is in terms of "we" rather than "I". I think you made an unusual psychological separation if you can describe your childhood without including your identical twin in the description.
