To find out the word for the past tense word "was" in Spanish you'll need to know the verbs for "to be." Estar means to be, as in "estoy en el parque." Also, Ser means to be, as in "Soy estudiante."

Era is what is used for was...in certain context. Yo era joven...I was young. But my wife says yo sigo joven. wink
