ASK A QUESTION New Member Survey (Unofficial): How did you find Spanishdict?
I am personally looking at how new members found their way to SpanishDict.com.
On a completely voluntary basis I wonder if members who have joined the SpanishDict community during October 2009 would indicate how they came to know about this web site.
For example could you indicate:
~ Did you find your way to this site by yourself
~ Were you referred to this site by an existing member
~ If you were referred to this site by an exisiting member, how long had that person been a member, if you have that information
~ Were you referred to this site by a teacher
~ If you were referred here by a teacher, was it a teacher at an elementary school, a high school or a college or university
~ If you were referred to this web site, were you given any information about how to use this web site or where to find this sites Rules and Guidelines.
Thanks for whatever answers you provide in replies to this Question Posting.

I found the site like most people do through googling "Spanish dictionary" or something similar (The stats I have seen confirm these search keywords). But I only ever used it as a dictionary for the longest time. When I started the job search after some terrible times in the public school arena, I found a job listed to write online reference articles for this site and I almost fell out of my chair with excitement when Chris called to hire me.
The reason we don't get a lot of direct traffic from google searches with "learn," "lessons," or "courses" in the keywords is because there aren't enough links out there to the "Learn" section. The more links a page has posted all over the internet, the higher it will be on google's search results. This may be selfish since I love the "Learn" section so much, but I would love to see more direct links to www.spanishdict.com/learn so that more people will find it and know that SD actually does offer the best online learning course and it's free!
- Hi Paralee, love your teachings. Gracias ;) - Amor_y_paz Mar 25, 2011 flag
I started searching for "spanish lessons" in Google and Youtube.
The same
I entered Youtube and typed in "Spanish lessons". I got a number of results, but when I first saw one of Paralee's lessons, I decided to google for this misterious SpanishDict
And I've been here since 2nd July.
I googled a Spanish word when I needed a translation. I was impressed by this site so I saved it to my favorites. Several months later I was taking Scottish Gaelic and I started thinking that if I am going to learn another language, it might as well be one I will be able to use. So, I put Gaelic on pause and decided to learn Spanish. Rosetta Stone is free for members of the U.S. Army so I started on that. A couple of days after that I looked at Spanishdict again. It was then that I noticed the learn Spanish link. I clicked on it and it said I had to join to use that part. So, here I am. By the way, I feel that I learn a lot more on here than Rosetta Stone.
- Thanks for reading my mind about Rosetta Stone vs this site - nizhoni1 Oct 12, 2009 flag
- Wow! Thanks! That is such a huge complement to compare my lessons to Rosetta Stone. - Paralee Oct 12, 2009 flag
- i agree with Seitheach on Rosetta Stone, Paralee much better teacher! and easy to access. - theMax Oct 12, 2009 flag
- I'm using Rosetta stone now to review my French and really wishing there were a site like this for Fench. - lachelvi Jul 6, 2011 flag
My students found the site. Our first day of class I handed out prompts on slips of paper telling them to find various things online (translators, dictionaries, tourism pages, videos, music, news). The idea was to open their eyes to all the real world Spanish available to them online. I've since discovered the flashcards feature of the site and I love it. I make sets for my students whenever we have a vocabulary quiz approaching and I reccomend they use the flashcards to study. For liability reasons I can't reccomend that my students join the online community (I teach middle school), but many of them use the website and at least one has joined so that he can post his high scores and try to beat mine. I've reccomended the site to the 5 other Spanish teachers at my school and at least one has begun using the website regularly.
I think many people like myself came to this site after searching "Spanish Dictionary" in one of the many free Search Engines like Google. Whoever decided upon the name "SpanishDict" as a product name deserves a Masters Degree in Marketing, knowing fullwell the search result would bring up the link to SpanishDict.
Having not ONE but TWO Supermodels for Teachers is another great piece of marketing mastery, Paralee and Heidita are two good reasons to learn Spanish. lol.
I personally think the theme tune to SpanishDict gives the right over all perception. Young, fresh, professional website with a modern upbeat tempo!!!
I googled spanish learning site or some similar combination of words.I was looking for a way to study on line. Spanish Dict popped up first
I found my way to the site because of a posting on the Mensan language mailing list about free sites that teach foreign languages.
For years I have been trying to learn Spanish from textbooks and audio selfhelp means with only moderate success. I Googled up a couple of translators and about 6 months ago found SpanishDict and liked it because of the 3 different translators on the site. About 3 months ago I thought I would check out the lessons and got hooked. Nice work Paralee!
I am taking a Beginning Spanish class this semester and was having problems with the pronunciations of some of the words. I came across this site after doing a search for "Spanish translations pronunciations" ... I now use this site to supplement my class lessons, and I showed the website to my Spanish professor. She loved it and gave me permission to pass this website along to my fellow classmates. I've also given this website to others that I know who are learning or want to learn Spanish ...
There's not many things on the internet that I find truly helpful - this website is one of the most helpful sites I've ever come across ...
Thank you to the developers of SpanishDict.com ... You have saved my life (and my grade) this semester :D
I googled it. I really really wanted to learn Spanish for a long time but time and money were a factor. One summer I enrolled online with the Don Quijote School of Spanish in Madrid. For a three month beginner's course it cost around $300 Canadian. I needed to be finished in three months. I am a teacher and sometimes time is a luxury for me. Plus I figured that it would cost me a lot of money before I became fluent. So, I googled 'learn Spanish' and found this site. Here I am still. This is a great site! Heartfelt thanks to everyone. I love it and even though I am not fluent yet, I have learned a lot and I want to keep learning!
What is the purpose of your survey? Since there are many one time users they will never going to see your questionnaire. What is the accuracy you are hoping for? Since my joining date is October 10, 2009, and I have been here for over two years, there is no way to verify the accuracy for the result. I guess just for fun it is OK.
- What a buzz kill! It's got to have more meaning than "What is your favorite day of the week?" or any of the other intriguing posts that we have. I'd like to know if people come here from word of mouth recommendations or if they just stumble on to this s - qfreed Oct 11, 2009 flag
- qfreed is there a spanish equivalent for "buzz Kill" - nizhoni1 Oct 11, 2009 flag
- You're asking me? There are probably 4 yr. old's that know more Spanish than I do. - qfreed Oct 11, 2009 flag
- jejejejejm zoltan very funny, I joined october 10th too, lovely!!!! - Heidita Oct 12, 2009 flag
- qfreed 4 year olds may have neither had a buzz nor a kill of any kind;-) - nizhoni1 Oct 12, 2009 flag
I joined two weeks ago, which is just before October, but I'm still a new member. I found the site by googling "Spanish English dictionary".
- me too :) - sunshinzmomm Oct 12, 2009 flag
I too found this site after 'googling' for a Spanish translator or something. I really liked the site so I stayed.
Since I wasn't referred to this site, I guess the only question that applies is the first one ![]()
I do appreciate the free tools on this site, and also Paralee's exuberance for the Spanish language. I have been using Rosetta Stone for 18 months now, having completed four levels in Latin American Spanish, and am getting ready to begin the fifth and last level. I have used several teaching 'methods' and courses, and RS has worked extremely well for me, but I have found that there are 'gaps' in every system. In my free time I'v been going through the lessons here on SD and I consider them an adjunct to my other Spanish studies. The photo/word associations on SD are a bit harder for me to understand than RS, but that's probably because it's just different (or maybe I'm getting too old). I think the tools here on SD are an invaluable resource for Spanish learners like myself.
It's really nice having a community of fellow Spanish learners too.
Hi
I found the site looking for help to translate unknown words. Been here ever since.
My elementary school teacher referred me here....just kidding.
I found this site by googling "learn spanish free online" or something similar. By the way, that particular combination of words will require that you go to page 4 of the google search results.
I can't remember if I read the rules or not (I generally do at least try to slog through those types of things before checking "I have read and agree"...but not always).
- I was probably a member for quite a while before I even figured out there WAS a forum. - webdunce Oct 11, 2009 flag
- Webdunce-Be of good cheer. SpanishDict does not ask you to read any rules when you register. You were not asked to agree or disagree. Good thing, Eh! (Eh is Canadian for every thing.) - Moe Oct 11, 2009 flag
